Exclusive Interview With Benny Royal & Robbie Taylor about "Vodka"

Hey, guys! Where are you from? Did you grow up on/near the music scene or how did you get addicted to music making?

Benny: Yooow!! I'm coming from Holland and I grew up as a real music lover from a very young age.. I was always was listening to all kinds of music, but my favourite was always the electronic sounds. When I was 15 years old I wanted to become a DJ and so I started to save some money to buy myself a DJ set with 2 vinyl decks and a simple mixer.. After a while I had the feeling that I wanted to do more, just playing records wasn't enough for me.. Producing my own music was on my mind and it didn't take long before I started to learn more about producing. When I started to hear my own music in the clubs, it was an amazing feeling and a boost to make more and better music.

RobbieI grew up in a very musically oriented family. My father plays trumpet, my mother plays saxophone and so on. I already played saxophone when I was six years old. Actually playing music is my lifestyle ever since.

I bet you love visiting foreign countries, don't you? Can you recall any fanny story to tell about some of your "foreign experience"?

Benny: YEAH!! It's great to see so many places and people across the world. It's really a crazy thought to know that people from all over are knowing you by your music. While ago I had a gig in Turkey and they booked me for a whole week, once I was there I didn't had to play, just one night in a small club.. Had a whole week vacation for myself and didn't cost me anything.. hehe

RobbieI do indeed love to travel to see different cultures and to taste different food and drinks. Spoken about drinks, my new recording is based on a trip with Benny to Khabarovsk in Russia. Benny thought he was able to win a vodka drinking game of a couple Russians.

How much of your time is dedicated to music? Do you have any side-hobby or you're all into music?

Benny: 24/7!! haha It's on my mind all day and everyday.. It's almost a fulltime job, but the days when I don't wanna hear anything, I like to hang out with my friends or family.

RobbieThe time that I spend in the studio varies from week to week. Sometimes I'm able to lock myself up in the studio for days, but sometimes I'm not able to do anything with music for a week or so. Besides working as a producer of music, I'm a manager of a music stage in my local residence. So sometimes it's very busy keeping everything up and running, but luckily at other times I have more time to work on my tracks.

Talking about your new release Vodka… what is the idea of it? Any personal experience involved in there?

Robbie Taylor & Benny Royal - Vodka (Original Mix) @ Beatport

Benny: Well that's a personal experience.. haha Me and Robbie had a gig in Russia 'Khabarovsk' it was 6 January and it was Xmass for the Russian people "Orthodox" So at the gig it was a lot of fun, girls where dancing wild with their tits out of their clothes.. Crazy night!! We were having a good time and the Vodka's was like water.. When we got home I was getting too drunk and the next morning we had a 13 hour flight back home.. Robbie didn't sleep because I was really sick and he was afraid that something would happen so far away from home, so happy that he did that because you never know what could happen.. At the flight back I had to stay on the toilet for a long time.. It was one of my worst days ever! :P

RobbieLike I've mentioned before the track is based on a drinking game between Benny and a couple of Russians. Of course Benny didn't had a change of beating these heavy drinkers. As a result Benny was immense drunk and sick during the trip home and therefore he had to visit the toilet very often.

Do you think that the weirdness is the key to become noticed?

Benny: Currently there are many good producers, and many good records, it's hard to stand out. I like to make several styles. Vodka is one of our foreign records with a separate flow .. Something like this stands out if you ask me.

RobbieNo, I think that purity and creativity are points by which people are marked. Besides that it's important to invest in the promotion of your tracks. It's a pitty only to work on a track and leave the promotion of that track simply for what is. Be proud on your music and show the world what you're standing for.

Who do you most respect in the dj world?

Benny: I can tell so many good names, but at the end I respect every hardworking DJ and producer. It's all for the love of House!

RobbieI've got different dj's who have inspired me a lot. I've always been a fan of Spanish house from heroes like dj Chus. I do spin a lot of his productions that are part of his label Stereo Productions and likewise I'm excited to work with him on a regular basis. Besides this I'm for example inspired by Carl Cox and DJ Dimitri from Amsterdam.

What are your ambitions?

Benny: To live a happy and healthy life, trying to do my part in the buizz.. Some day I would like to see myself in the TOP100 Djmag.

RobbieMy ambition is to be happy and to do nice and cool things. I would love it to fly around the world every weekend to visit different clubs and make people dance. Moreover I love to do things differently than other DJ's, such as integrating different influences and elements from different cultures into my music.

How many words you need to define your own style?

Benny: Beats, grooves, drums and catchy themes. Experimental and stubborn. :P

RobbieI would like to describe my own style as: musically, energetic, but always with a good groove. I'm always ready to do what I've got to do, to make people dance.

Do you have a favorite politician and why?

Benny: I keep myself not too busy with those things.

RobbieI haven't got a favorite politician. What's important for me is that a politician is trustworthy and focusing on relevant issues on an administrative or legislative level. I'm liberal minded and I think that the world will only get better when the people themselves are working to reach such goals.
