Admittedly inspired by every morsel of music that crosses his path, Romanian-born Norway resident Baiceanu weaves a rich carpet of world sounds under a tech house roof. His musical explorations know no limits. Pay attention to the interplay of varying drumbeats and the smorgasbord of ethnic influences, but don’t think too hard; these tracks are meant to be felt.
When you listen to ‘Gardens of Eden’ picture yourself on a Technicolor yellow African plain. A magnificent Shaka Zulu jumps out from behind a baobab, wielding a spear and muttering incantations. The spear is flung with might to ride the azure sky in slow motion while the tribesmen beat out contrapuntal rhythms to whistles and shouts. An odyssey into dream landscapes and primal urges.
The original ‘That Sound’ presents a sensual latin female vocal, rife with moans and rolling r’s, whispering in your ear one minute and scolding you the next while rattles and drum kits shake, throb, and thump to trad African rhythms that juxtapose beautifully with the electonica.
The remix version of ‘That Sound’ by Dibby Dougherty has a darker, more urban feel, with playful staccato synth riffs and vocal accents shining through the gloom. The relentless bongos will make your head spin.
