Freitag Recordings' opening salvo of minimal techno is a work to behold. This freshman label's first release has something for everyone, from the cool, sexy grooves to dirty, gritty beats, this compilation has everything.
The album opens with a dark, spooky banger Roomshine from German producer 'Slangsdorf,' featuring a dynamic beat and some heavy vocal samples, with an aftertaste of a 1950s sci-fi flick. Following that is Thomas Ploch - Bad Mushrooms, a driving beat with a groovy synth lead and an occasional screech synth to harsh your trip.
Coming down from that, we find Italian-born Fely B's 'Euphoria'; a simple yet effective bass guitar bassline with an in-your-face lead and a stressed out pad, both of which make suspiciously few appearances. 'Giant of Olympus' falls into place at #4 on the tracklist, with a minimal beat breaks down nicely into a Greek vocal sample; very pushy tune from Greece's own John Hellson.
Jeff Keenan's approach to track #5 'Feels So Good' is cool, with an often chaotic syncopation and a driving beat with tribal vocal samples, following the escapades of a tweeting lead synth. Next up, The Pete brings us an energetic tune 'The Mission' with a rubbery lead and bouncy bassline chasing melancholy pads, building to a cavalcade of swirling drums and a calm breakdown.
At #7 on the list, Rappina's 'The Time Changes' takes over with thick crunchy bass phrases accented with overdriven guitar responses and a warm wailing guitar lead. Next, Minimalistic & Numb put together a real boomer: The chaos rising from the very first beat, the destroyed vocals and weird synths of 'Positive' make it the perfect soundtrack to the road to Hell.
Japan's Kazu Kimura contributed a rocking 'Hypnotyde,' with an infectious synth groove tempered with sounds and techniques that recall the ocean, from submarine alarms to the sound of the surf in the breakdown. At #10 on the list, Italy does it again, bringing us the relentless techno sound we've come to expect from Electrorites; 'Insects' Starts off sounding like a swarm on the hunt and pushes that energy the whole time, without much of a breakdown.
Last but not least the Boston native Monktec crawls up with his own 'Black Spider': Atmospheric vocals and dreamy pads belie the Black Spider's breakdown, which is short, fast, and attacks without warning.
