Double Trouble is a sleek little groove, and an exercise in simplicity. January is a time for sobriety, chilling and cutting down on the partying 2 right? Wrong. When there are sassy new grooves like this to contend with, why bother with behaving? Jay Lumen's certainly got different ideas.

The Hungarian whizz kid steps back up to the plate with his new EP, bringing the world another two slices of dancefloor prowess. Can You Dance is a typically sprightly affair, galloping along at a pacey tempo with pitch-shifting cymbal rides, Krupa-esque snare fills and a classic vocal sample taken down a few notches to a druggy timbre. The sample in question comes from Blaze feat. Palmer Brown's classic My Beat, and sounds as fresh and compelling today as it did almost 15 years ago. All this energetic texture is sat atop a wiggling, low-slung b-line, with a subtle jazzy flavour permeating the mix. Resistance is futile.

Flip over for The Drummer and you'll be treated to another ride through Lumen's impressive arsenal of syncopated percussion and incessant bass pressure. Wigged-out vocal snippets and mind-bending FX weave in and out of his galloping groove, with a subtle yet tense breakdown that takes your eye off the ball and sets the drop up for a seriously potent impact.

Tomcraft's ever-impressive Craft Music returns to kick the January blues into touch with a very tasty, spicy 4-track collection from himself and three rising artists: the Mexican EP.

The label owner's Taco heads up the herd with its fierce electro house stylings. Packing a hell of a punch, it fuses rude synth grunts, super-sharp percussion and all manner of bleeps with bundles of big room appeal. Soaring builds hammered by heavy drums lift the track up into the ether before the futuristic tech-funk groove slams back into life. A perfect set-builder.

Solid Snake follow up their recent impressive work with another solid banger: the undulating techno chug of DFWH. Arpeggiated bass, taut bongos and fizzing shakers form a beast of a groove, with layers of extra percussion and FX welded together in potent fashion and a rasping sidewinder of a lead line boring its way through the heart of the track. Tough tackle.

It's a deeper approach that SQL take on Inside Myself, opting for wonky, drugged-up techno with a menacing glint in its eye. It's an exercise in subtlety, throbbing bass carefully woven into the root of the track, pitched and glitched vocals twisting around and eerily tribal percussion and textures heightening the tension.

David Durst rounds off the EP in dark style with the rumbling Side One. While ostentisbly techno, there's something about its mood that recalls old skool progressive house, all brooding and slow-building with an emphasis on spooky atmospheres. There's nothing overstated; instead the focus here is on heads-down hypnotism. Get involved and zone out.

If the secret to really being felt on the dance floor has its foundations in meticulous production then Phunk Investigation need not worry. Because new EP ‘Back To The New Wave’ confirms that at some point in their eleven year career they found the blueprint to production success.

The EP’s title track sees menacing bass synths rumble seismically through a delicately woven mesh of tight hi-hats. Then comes a desolate, eerie hook that floats above the mix fleetingly before dispersing into the aural ether, like ink in water. This is stunning production: formidable yet refined, beefy yet intelligently balanced. It’s production with a sophisticated taste for songcraft and an awareness that understated melody can be just as rousing, stirring and affecting as any melodically brazen floor-filler.

B-side ‘Bamboo’ is a disarming concoction of energetic, off-kilter synths, dissonant vocal samples and bone-snapping basslines. There’s also an irresistibly sharp remix of ‘Back To The New Wave’ from luminary DJ and producer Stefano Noferini, a major player on the international dance scene and a mainstay of super-clubs across Europe. His pulsating house hits have become staples in sets from the likes of Carl Cox and Paul Van Dyk.

Phunk Investigation’s own approach to the zenith of dance floor notoriety has been steady and unrelenting. Since forming in Italy back in 2000, the duo (Stefano Silvestri and Dino Maggiorana) have become hot property across Europe and beyond – regularly appearing in high-profile guest DJ slots and amassing a remix catalogue that includes the likes of Simple Minds, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Boy George and Faithless. They’ve also collaborated with big-name DJs like Umek, John Acquaviva and Danny Tenaglia.

And, it should go without saying, you know it's going to be a heavily tribal affair. The master teams up with Supernova on this new release to give his Iberican trademark sound a little of that Italian tech flavour.

Italoberican Grooves gives you little room for manoeuvre. It's a case of DANCE, or else. This audio imperative is concocted by way of throbbing bass, punchy kick and taut clap, and most importantly layers and lashings of rolling tribal percussion that combine to create a swirling torrent of rhythm and tonal atmospherics. Topped off with a hypnotic vocal chant, it harks back to the golden age of tribal 2 before things went all deep and minimal. An instrumental is supplied for those who want to keep it percussive, and a vocal tool-a-pella for those wishing for some extra weapons to add spice to their sets.

The Lapsus Dub is on a similar tip, yet with the techno factor turned up a few notches. Bigger hi-hats, rumbling fills and bugged-out vocal FX add more layers of intensity, the track pounding along like a steamroller. Its energy is relentless, and should see this release get strong support in the techier community.

We are pleased to welcome London's Congaloid label to the January That Mixmag Thing. The label is the new project from former Fabric resident Solo, and specialises in deep, percussive funk-fuelled house music. The first two releases on the label have found their way into the bags of many of the world's top house DJs, from Richie Hawtin to Claude von Stroke, and if you have a listen below, you'll understand why.

Solo has made quite a name for himself in dance music circles with epic DJ sets and releases on esteemed house music labels like Dirtybird, Sound Pellegrino, Deadfish and most recently Kling Klong with the single 'Cringe'. He's also remixed huge names like Underworld and Depeche Mode. The former Fabric resident had this to say about starting his new label Congaloid:

“There are so many labels around that sometimes we miss great songs and ideas simply because they get lost in the big internet mess. It gives me great pleasure when I find some new producers out there and play their songs before anyone else, and I hope that Congaloid will give the same feeling to every listener and every avid DJ that wants the freshest stuff.

Label mate Seka (above) makes tunes laced with interesting percussion – a testament to his history as a drummer. From slow paced deep sounds to more racy tech-house, Seka injects varity and personality into all his productions. “Production and DJ sets of any singular style will eventually become dull,” he says, which is why you can expect a variety of top notch house sounds from his set at That Mixmag Thing January.

Andreas Hogby who already lent his vocal talents to Hearts Of Stone from Sharams latest artist album In My Blood. As a huge fan of the band Sharam was immediately all hooked up by the idea of working with the guys.

The result is a hybrid of indie-rock, electro and dance. The video by director Johan Holm who also did the ones for both, Monday Morning and Army Of men, is really setting the mood right for this cold time of the year.

Ludovic Vendi: mysterious, sophisticated and beautiful.  David Tort: inspirational and original.

Little Labs "Voice of God". Great piece of kit, best name ever.

FLASH Circle compilation 2011 part1 [FLASH 048]

FLASH is the label that represents Florian Meindl's taste in electronic music and will establish musical visions and ideas, not necessarily a specific sound. The label features the circle of producers affiliated to, and around him.

The compilation Circle 2011 follows the success of 2010 edition and consists of 2 parts with exclusive unmixed tracksl, is clearly focussed on the dancefloor between the genres House and Techno.

Established acts like Thomas Schumacher, Christian Smith, Martin Eyerer, Daso, Juergen Kirsch, Animal Trainer, Kellerkind are involved as well as upcoming producers like Martin Patino, Daniel Kampf, Marco Dassi, Spada and more. Some highlights? Florian and Christan Smith welcome us with 'Desire' - a driving, syncopated track that gurgles with a cracking Detroit bassline.

Juergen Kirsch follows on with 'Wonder Why', adopting a skating groove and probing vocal loop that properly envelopes the listener. Then getting seductive with some deep, whispered vocal play and deft tom work is FLASH's very own Martin Patino with his fantastic and aptly titled 'Subtle', while other label fellow Daso puts his usual eccentricity to one side momentarily and dishes up classic deep house vibes on the penultimate 'Roll Again'.

The label honcho himself wraps up the sampler, dropping a lively, electro-pad driven house groove with a little help from the masterful Ricardo Philips on the elegant 'Rebirth'.

End of year albums are always a tricky proposition. In reality, it’s a bit of a stretch to encapsulate an entire year’s worth of music within a single release. So rather than make that speculative assertion, we’d rather say that Must Have 2011 is a comprehensive look back over the last 12 months in our house & tech-house music, featuring some of what we consider to be the hot tunes over that period and the ones that you must have. And while some might argue over inclusions or omissions (and we hope you do) we’d like to think that with the amount of music we’ve been exposed to in 2011, we’re reasonably well qualified to make those selections.

DJ Boris, Rob Mirage, Oscar de Rivera, Ismael Rivas, David Herrero, Paolo Mojo, D-Formation, David Penn, Rober Gaez, Patrick M, Mikel Curcio are some of the awesome artists in this must have compilation.
